Behind the port are the steep, multi-coloured volcanic slopes of Eldfell and Helgafell. The layout of these two prominent peaks includes:Eldfell (The Hill of Fire): This is the stark, reddish-black cinder cone positioned directly to the east of the harbor. It is a brand-new mountain that did not exist until the famous 1973 volcanic eruption. The massive black lava wall flanking the eastern edge of the port is the exact flow that almost sealed the harbor shut.Helgafell (The Holy Mountain): Located immediately alongside Eldfell, this is a much older, dormant, and more heavily vegetated green cone that formed thousands of years ago.
