The Spanish Arch

Built in 1584 under Galway's 34th mayor, Wylliam Martin, the structure was originally named Ceann an Bhalla ("Head of the Wall"). It was built as a defensive fortification extending from the older 12th-century Norman city walls to protect the bustling town quays and fish markets from looting
