The tree stumps found in the peat bogs of County Donegal are the remains of ancient, native forests that covered Ireland thousands of years ago. As the climate shifted and rainfall increased, the waterlogged, acidic bog conditions prevented the fallen trees from fully decomposing, preserving them in the peat On the right is a small ridge where peat would previously have been cut. Unless you have original landowner rights, cutting peat is now forbidden.
