Entrance to Salzburg Cathedral
The numbers above the three bronze entrance doors to commemorate the three separate times the cathedral was historically consecrated after being built or heavily reconstructed: 774 (Left Gate): Commemorates the very first consecration of the original Romanesque cathedral, which was built by Saint Virgil. 1628 (Middle Gate - missing the '8'): Marks the grand consecration of the magnificent early-Baroque cathedral structure you see today, built by Prince-Archbishop Paris Lodron after a devastating fire destroyed the previous medieval building.1959 (Right Gate): Commemorates the third consecration of the church following extensive post-WWII restorations. A bomb crashed directly through the central dome in 1944, requiring over a decade of intensive rebuilding to restore the cathedral to its former glory.
