View over the Burren showing division of land

The Burren (derived from the Irish word Boireann (meaning "a rocky place")), is vast limestone pavement which stretches across 530 square kilometres of County Clare and south County Galway. The bedrock consists of massive terraced layers of Carboniferous limestone formed roughly 350 million years ago.
